AUBURNDALE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities have identified the body of man who died when his car collided with an Amtrak train in central Florida.

Auburndale Deputy Police Chief K. Andy Ray says 44-year-old Verne Lee Davis Jr. attempted to go around train gates as the train approached.

The Ledger (https://bit.ly/1WC0Lg3 ) reports the engine pulling the 97 Silver Meteor heading from Miami to New York pushed the four-door Saturn about 1,000 feet down the track. When police arrived they found bystanders who were trying to help Davis. He was trapped inside the vehicle.

Rescue crews tried to render aid, but Davie was declared dead at the scene. Witnesses told police Davis was stopped behind several vehicles when he pulled out of the lane and went around the crossing arms.

The 155 passengers on the train were not injured.
