MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - State police are searching for the driver of a stolen sport-utility vehicle who led officers on a chase throughout Nassau County before hitting a trooper’s vehicle and escaping on foot.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1KsVBtz ) the Monday afternoon chase began when a trooper from the Lake Success barracks attempted to stop the SUV for speeding on Ocean Parkway.

Police say the SUV continued to drive northbound on the Meadowbrook State Parkway and exited at the Babylon Turnpike before re-entering the parkway headed southbound.

State police spokesman Frank Bandiero says the black Mitsubishi Outlander, reported stolen from New York City, then exited at Merrick Road and hit another vehicle.

The driver continued, but suddenly stopped and crashed into a pursuing trooper’s car just north of Sunrise Highway before fleeing.
