PHOENIX (AP) - A teenage mother in Phoenix has been sentenced to five years in prison and lifetime probation for dropping her newborn out a window in an effort to conceal her pregnancy.

Samantha Perez was sentenced Tuesday. She was 16 at the time of the incident in 2013, but was charged as an adult by prosecutors.

Perez pleaded guilty in June to attempted second-degree murder and child abuse.

The infant was discovered in an attached storage shed by sheriff’s deputies who responded to a call about a woman bleeding at the home the girl shared with her parents.

The newborn was found lying on a concrete floor with head injuries and a portion of the umbilical cord still attached. The baby girl was treated for a skull fracture and poor prenatal care.
