ILLIOPOLIS, Ill. (AP) - A ten- year-old central Illinois boy has been seriously injured in a crash involving the lawn tractor he was driving and a pickup truck.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department says the boy was driving a lawn tractor pulling a trailer on a road outside Illiopolis late Monday when it was rear-ended by the pickup.

Authorities say a 25-year-old man in the trailer jumped off before impact. The unidentified man was not seriously injured.

The driver of the pickup, a 20 year old man from Buffalo who hasn’t been identified, was not injured.

Sangamon County Chief Deputy Sheriff Joe Roesch says the boy was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say it’s unclear why the boy was driving on the road at night.
