ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - A judge has scheduled a trial next month for an Alabama man charged with killing 22 kittens that he bought using the website Craigslist.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1NekGP5 ) a Limestone County Circuit Court judge has set a Sept. 14 trial date for 50-year-old Ronald Fraser Golden of Athens.

Golden was charged with 22 counts of animal cruelty in October 2013. Police say Golden’s neighbors called them to report dead kittens found near his home. According to police, Golden told officers he was angry at the world and stomped or strangled the kittens inside his home.

Defense attorney Lucas Beaty says Golden has a history of mental illness for which he has been hospitalized multiple times. The judge ordered a mental evaluation of Golden in June.
