ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan is getting nearly $4 million for research into the conservation of estuaries.

U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan on Tuesday announced the funding from the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.

Peters and Stabenow say they money also will help researchers look at the potential impacts that water quality degradation, habitat loss and climate change may have on estuary ecosystems.

Estuaries are bodies of water and their surrounding habitats typically found where rivers meet the sea. They can harbor unique plant and animal life.
