HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Authorities in Sanders County have ordered the evacuation of 14 homes threatened by fires burning in the Kootenai National Forest north of Noxon.

Fire information officer John Head says one fire is burning about a quarter-mile away from the nearest residence.

The houses are in a narrow canyon on a six-mile stretch of Highway 56.

Head says residents of at least 20 more houses south of the evacuation area have been given notice that they may have to leave, too.

He says a shelter is being set up in Noxon.

Multiple lightning-caused fires are burning more than 3 square miles in the Bull River drainage.

Head says the fire near the houses jumped a perimeter line in some places, and winds from a cold front expected Thursday could cause it to spread.
