PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - The family of a 13-year-old boy who was pronounced brain dead following a fatal crash on Route 80 in Wayne says the teen has shown signs of life.

NJ.com reports (https://bit.ly/1J3bjeS ) Michael Lavecchia Sr., grandfather of Michael Lavecchia III, says he saw movement in “Mikey’s” leg, shoulder and head Monday at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson.

Mikey was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a Mack truck parked on the shoulder of Route 80 Saturday. State Police say he was pronounced brain dead Sunday at 11:55 a.m.

Lavecchia Sr. says the boy was being kept on life support until his organs could be donated. After seeing Mikey move, Lavecchia Sr. had his death certificate destroyed Monday night.

He says a neurologist never saw Mikey at St. Joseph’s.
