CHICAGO (AP) - An attorney says the city of Harvey will pay seven rape victims a total of $1.44 million to settle lawsuits over untested rape kits.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Yao Dinizulu said Wednesday that the settlement also requires Harvey to provide more police training on rape cases and reporting them to Illinois State Police.

WBBM reports (https://cbsloc.al/1KwjPD8 ) the victims said they were sexually assaulted between 1997 and 2008 and alleged Harvey police didn’t investigate their cases in a timely fashion and violated their due process by not submitting the rape kits to the state police crime lab.

Harvey will pay one of the victims $1.2 million and the six others will shared a combine $241,000.

Cook County authorities and state police found more than 200 untested rape kits during a 2007 raid.
