LONGPORT, N.J. (AP) - The Jersey Shore town of Longport will award just over $67,000 to the estate of a deceased police officer for unused sick time.

The Press of Atlantic City reports (https://bit.ly/1TSIImP ) Sgt. Charles Adams, who died in an Aug. 2014 motorcycle crash, had accumulated 1,326.5 hours in unused sick time at a rate of $50.58 per hour.

Solicitor Pacifico Agnellini says the borough initially denied the request for the payout because the police contract was unclear if the municipality was on the hook for the money.

Longport’s police union filed a grievance, and on Aug. 4 an arbitrator ruled Adams’ estate was entitled to the unused sick time pay.

A new contract between Longport and the union capped unused sick time payouts at $18,000 for employees hired after Jan. 1, 2015.
