SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A southwest Florida man was arrested after authorities say he severely beat his young dog for chewing through a pillow.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office reports that 26-year-old Steven Thompson took his 14-pound terrier mix, Sugar, to an emergency vet Tuesday morning. Veterinary staff reported finding that the 9-month-old dog was in critical respiratory distress and suffered from internal injuries.

Thompson admitted to deputies that he threw the dog against the floor and punched her after she chewed up a decorative pillow that belonged to his girlfriend.

Thompson was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal. He was later released on $1,500 bail. Jail records didn’t list an attorney.
