KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A massive launch of sky lanterns is planned during an event at the Kalamazoo Speedway.

The Grand Rapids Press reports (https://bit.ly/1EC8PlO ) Lantern Fest is set for Sept. 26 after a planned October event at Berlin Raceway in Marne was dropped.

The event’s website says it’s a chance to “light the sky with our highest hopes, deepest regrets and fondest dreams.”

Kenny Head, who works in operations at the speedway, says event producer Sack Lunch Productions will provide resources for firefighters to be on-hand at the event. He says they’ve addressed safety concerns and talked it over with local officials.

Similar events have taken place in other parts of the country. Smaller-scale use of sky lanterns in Michigan has prompted concern among officials about the risk for wildfires and other blazes.
