GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - A Greeley man is recovering after a rare lightning strike that knocked him unconscious as he was riding his motorcycle on Interstate 25.

The Greeley Tribune reports (https://tinyurl.com/p4aapdq) 31-year-old Eugene Villines was on his way home from his job in Aurora Friday when lightning hit nearby. Witnesses said he slumped over, veered off the right side of the highway and crashed.

He was taken to University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora with burns, a punctured lung and broken ribs.

Dr. Arek Wiktor says the lightning probably struck the highway first. He says Villines might have died from the crash if he hadn’t been wearing a helmet and other safety gear.

Wiktor says it’s rare for lightning to strike humans and even more unusual for a motorcyclist to be hit.
