CLEVELAND (AP) - A Cleveland man has been sentenced to 31 years to life in prison for fatally shooting his 12-year-old stepdaughter and wounding the girl’s mother.

Sixty-year-old Rufus Gray was sentenced in Cleveland on Wednesday after pleading guilty to aggravated murder and other charges before the start of his trial on Monday.

Authorities say Gray walked into his wife’s home in October and opened fire, killing Davia Garth and wounding Sonya Garth, who was treated at a hospital. She had filed for a divorce from Gray months earlier. Police have said Garth’s 24-year-old son wrestled a gun from Gray’s hands and beat him after the shooting.

Sonya Garth has said that Davia loved Gray and called him “daddy.”

Gray’s attorneys didn’t respond to telephone messages seeking comment.
