SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has banned campfires and candles in state campgrounds and beaches due to the high number of wildfires burning around the state.

Deputy Director MG Devereux said in a statement Wednesday that many local fire departments are short-staffed after sending engines to protect homes from wildfires around the state, and a fire in a campground would create “an unnecessary burden.”

The ban includes fires in fire pits, but does not include propane stoves and briquettes. It remains in effect for at least one week.
