INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police say an armed robbery suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers confronted him and a second suspect.

Police said Wednesday that preliminary autopsy results show 21-year-old Michael Henderson of Indianapolis shot himself Monday night. Investigators say they recovered the handgun Henderson used.

Police also identified the second suspect as 20-year-old Dequan Washington. They say he’s being held in the Marion County Jail on a preliminary robbery charge.

Police confronted the pair after a fast food restaurant was robbed earlier Monday evening. They say that after Washington stepped away from the vehicle peacefully, gunfire came from the vehicle, and officers returned fire.

The incident occurred at an apartment complex a few blocks north of the Indiana State Fairgrounds, where the state fair is under way.
