LANCASTER, N.Y. (AP) - State police say an Ohio man is in a Buffalo hospital after the stolen car he was driving crashed into a rock quarry along the Thruway while he was trying to elude troopers.

Officials say a trooper spotted the car with New Jersey plates Tuesday as it traveled on Interstate 90’s westbound lanes between exits 48 and 49 just east of Buffalo.

Police say a chase ensued and 21-year-old Andrew J. Betancur Jr. of Columbus drove off the highway’s right shoulder, went down an embankment and crashed into the Buffalo Crushed Stone quarry in the town of Lancaster.

Betancur was taken to a Buffalo hospital. Troopers say Wednesday that information on his condition isn’t available.

Troopers say the car he was driving was reported stolen by police in the Monroe County town of Gates, outside Rochester.

This story has been changed to correct that driver’s condition is unknown instead of his suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
