SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are investigating an incident in which a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy mistakenly shot at another officer.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1JqFDp8 ) the deputy assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department responded to a call Tuesday from a man who reported hearing voices taunting him near his residence.

The deputy determined that the man was intoxicated but did not pose a threat to himself or others.

The deputy left the apartment and encountered someone, who he believed was holding a weapon, at the base of the stairwell. He fired one shot at the individual, who turned out to be another uniformed officer responding to the scene.

The bullet missed the officer, and he escaped injury.

The sheriff’s deputy has been removed from his enforcement assignment until an investigation is complete.
