SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - A Schenectady man faces 23 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend as they and their 9-month-old son sat in a parked car.

Jamell Modest pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and reckless endangerment Tuesday.

The child wasn’t injured when the 47-year-old Modest shot 30-year-old Markia Booth during an argument in a car on State Street in December 2014.

Prosecutors say Modest fled but was arrested shortly after by Schenectady police officers.

Modest will be sentenced in October to 23 years to life in state prison.

Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney said the family and friends of Booth “can take comfort in the fact that her murderer was brought to justice.”
