NEW YORK (AP) - Officials say Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn has agreed to enter an affiliation with North Shore-LIJ Health System.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1WGc0E7 ) the Maimonides board unanimously approved the affiliation Tuesday.

A joint announcement made Wednesday said the two sides will fully integrate “in a phased approach that will begin immediately.” Both institutions will remain independent and have separate governance structures for now.

North Shore-LIJ spokesman Terry Lynam says the move will mean “tens of millions” of dollars in renovations and outpatient expansion for the 711-bed Brooklyn hospital.

Lynam says the affiliation agreement allows the two sides to work together immediately rather than waiting for the state’s approval for full integration.

Maimonides spokeswoman Eileen Tynion says the relationship ensures long-term financial stability.

North Shore-LIJ is the country’s 14th largest health care system.
