CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A Charlotte transportation panel has endorsed the plan to add toll lanes to Interstate 77.

Multiple media outlets reported that the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization voted 54-10 for a plan including the toll lanes, despite opposition from many local groups.

Most who spoke before Wednesday’s vote opposed toll lanes from Charlotte to Iredell County.

Some members of the planning group said they had to vote yes because rejecting it would affect a number of projects over the next decade.

A group called Widen I-77 has sued to block the toll lanes on I-77. The group also says it plans to continue to try to convince state lawmakers to reject the idea.

The North Carolina transportation department and Gov. Pat McCrory have said it’s too late cancel the project.
