WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia police have identified a suspect in a shooting that left a recent American University graduate dead.

Police said Thursday that 19-year-old Marcus King has been charged with second-degree murder while armed in the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Matthew Shlonsky.

King tells WRC-TV that he’s innocent. In a telephone call to the station Thursday morning, King said he wants to turn himself in, but he’s too scared. He said he was a witness to the shooting but was not involved in any way.

Police believe Shlonsky was a bystander to a gunfight between two groups of people on Saturday afternoon near the Shaw Metro station in northwest Washington.

King, who lives nearby, told WRC he was shot in the face a few days before the fatal shooting.

This story has been corrected to note that Shlonsky was a recent American University graduate, not a student.
