DEMOPOLIS, Ala. (AP) - Alabama fire officials say lightning caused a fire that destroyed a church in western Alabama.

The state fire marshal’s office says Gilfield Baptist Church in Demopolis was destroyed by a blaze Tuesday night. Fire Marshal Ed Paulk tells Al.com (https://bit.ly/1J7Uorz ) major lightning strikes were detected in the surrounding area during a storm just before the fire was reported.

The church’s pastor Dewayne Charleston told WVTM-TV (https://bit.ly/1gYIXuT ) that the congregation will hold service outside Sunday if weather permits.

Demopolis is about 60 miles south of Tuscaloosa.
