FITCHBURG, Mass. (AP) - Police say a man who fired gunshots near the Fitchburg State University campus has been taken into custody.

Police received an emergency call Thursday evening from a woman reporting her son was walking around with a firearm. The man was identified as someone with a history of weapons violations and violent behavior toward police and who may have been drunk and suicidal.

The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and firing a weapon near a dwelling.

The university had warned the campus and the surrounding Fitchburg community about the armed man. An advisory on its website had urged people to stay indoors.

The university now says its campus is secure.

University spokesman Matthew Bruun (broon) says classes don’t begin until Sept. 3 and most students haven’t arrived.
