SWEETWATER, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida police department says that more than 7,000 items, including guns, money and liquor, have gone missing from its evidence room.

Acting Sweetwater Police Chief Placido Diaz told local media during a news conference Wednesday that an audit by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement found that 7,877 items that should have been inside the evidence room are missing.

Diaz says there is no indication that missing evidence has harmed any prosecutions, but the findings place future cases in jeopardy.

Sweetwater Mayor Orlando Lopez said at the news conference that police personnel most likely removed or stole the property, as nobody else had access to it.

Many details in the audit have not been made public. The agency has not released its findings, citing an exemption called “active intelligence.”
