AVON, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 70-year-old man who fell while walking the woods near his western New York home survived a week outdoors by drinking rain water.

Police say Donald Farrell was following two deer off a trail when he lost his footing and fell on Aug. 9 in Avon. That’s about 60 miles east of Buffalo.

Farrell told officers who interviewed him Wednesday that he was unable to get back up. He says he laid there for days and survived by drinking rain water off leaves.

Police say Farrell was eventually found the morning of Aug. 16 when a cousin who was searching for him heard his cries for help.

Farrell remains at a Rochester hospital where he’s listed in satisfactory condition.
