EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - The Lane Transit District is one step closer to increasing its payroll tax in 2016.

The Register-Guard of Eugene reports (https://bit.ly/1WGg7zW ) that the governing board conducted a first reading Wednesday of an ordinance that would raise the tax, followed by a public hearing in which three residents opposed the proposal.

The proposal would over the course of 10 years increase the tax to $8 per $1,000 of wages paid by an employer, as opposed to the current $7 per $1,000. The increase would jump by 10 cents per $1,000 each year.

Revenue from the proposed increase would go to a three-year increase in bus service hours.

A second reading and formal vote on the plan is scheduled for Sept. 16.
