SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) - Sidney’s top administrator plans to resign next week after 16 years on the job, but he insists he’s not being forced out.

City Manager Gary Person told KNEB Thursday he isn’t resigning because of the controversy over the actions of Sidney’s former public works director and its police chief.

Person says his resignation will allow help the city move forward. Person has been city manager since 1999. Before that, he led the area’s economic development efforts.

Earlier this week, Person fired Public Works Director John Hehnke, who was convicted of a misdemeanor for looking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and seeing her only partially clothed in 2014.

Sidney Police Chief B.J. Wilkinson decided against pursuing the case against Hehnke last year. Wilkinson pleaded no contest last month to obstructing government operations.
