TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) - Emergency management officials blame a lightning strike for a fire at a refinery near Houston.

Authorities say nobody was hurt in the fire Thursday at a Valero refinery in Texas City. Lightning struck an electrical transformer.

The Texas City Fire Department says there’s no danger to nearby residents and the fire would be allowed to burn itself out. A black smoke plume could be seen coming from the burning transformer oil.

Valero spokesman Steve Lee says refinery personnel were conducting air monitoring along the unit’s fence line. He said no impact was expected on the community.

The National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms in the Houston area could linger through Friday.
