JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) - State police say a West Virginia man has died after a semitrailer he was driving veered off southbound Interstate 295 in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island State Police say 59-year-old Dwight Greenleaf, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, had a medical emergency Thursday and lost control of his truck in Johnston. He veered off into a wooded area and struck a tree.

Greenleaf exited the truck after the crash and witnesses say he collapsed soon after.

Bystanders and rescue personnel performed CPR. Police say he died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Crews removed the semitrailer from the woods and cleaned the site of leaking gasoline.
