LITTLE SIOUX, Iowa (AP) - Workers have begun repairs on a Union Pacific Railroad bridge that collapsed near the western Iowa town of Little Sioux.

Omaha, Nebraska, television station KETV (https://bit.ly/1J7ouxw ) reports that the bridge collapsed Wednesday afternoon and that rising, rushing water from recent heavy rainfall may have caused the center pier to collapse.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis told The Associated Press Thursday that the last train crossed the bridge about 30 minutes before the collapse was reported to the railroad. Davis says the pier supported deck sections of 60 feet and 90 feet and that both sections fell into the water.

The daily traffic of eight trains has been detoured. Davis says it’s unclear when the repairs will be finished.
