BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The former fiance of a Vermont woman accused of causing a fatal car crash on Interstate 89 says she told him she “wanted to drive off the road.”

Karri Benoir of Barre re-entered not guilty pleas to second degree murder Wednesday in a Burlington court. She had previously been arraigned over the phone.

Police said the 23-year-old intended to kill herself when she crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle in Richmond on July 30. The crash killed 30-year-old Brendon Cousino of Richmond.

Michael Morissette testified in court that he and Benoir broke up before the crash.

The 36-year-old said she sent him a text message saying she was considering driving off the road.

Benoir declined to comment at the hearing. She is due in court on Thursday.
