DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say a woman has been killed and a man seriously hurt in a drive-by shooting in Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press and television stations WDIV and WXYZ report the Thursday afternoon shooting happened when a 38-year-old man was talking to a 51-year-old woman standing outside a car on the city’s east side. Police say a car drove by and someone in it fired at them.

The man, who briefly pursued the assailant in his car, is in critical condition at a hospital.

Police say the shooting was gang-related. Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt tells WXYZ he’s “beyond livid” that gang members are on the streets after being jailed.

Dolunt says police will do what they can to prevent acts of retaliation.
