HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - Firefighters say about 20 people and several pets escaped serious injury in a two-alarm fire that damaged two apartments and the attic of a 16-unit building in an apartment complex near downtown Henderson.

Henderson city spokeswoman Kathleen Richards said Friday that two adults were treated at the scene for minor injuries while firefighters battled the fire reported at 1:40 a.m. at the Morrell Park Apartments on Harris Street. That’s near Boulder Highway and Major Avenue.

Richards says the fire started in a first-floor apartment and spread to the second floor and roof before Henderson and Clark County firefighters brought it under control.

Richards says investigators blamed the fire on careless smoking.

A damage amount wasn’t immediately determined.

The American Red Cross was helping people who needed a place to stay.
