ALLEGAN, Mich. (AP) - The Allegan County Republican Party is calling for the resignation of the area’s state representative, who had an extramarital affair with a fellow legislator.

The Kalamazoo Gazette (https://bit.ly/1gZJUmt ) reports the party’s executive committee voted 14-4 Thursday night, urging Republican state Rep. Cindy Gamrat of Plainwell to resign “effective immediately.” Gamrat and Republican Rep. Todd Courser of Lapeer have apologized, but say they won’t resign.

Allegan County GOP Chairman Steve McNeal said Gamrat took part in Thursday’s vote.

Gamrat and Courser are under investigation by the House Business Office for whether they used misused public resources to try to cover up their affair. Courser has admitted to orchestrating a fictional email in May that said he was caught with a male prostitute to divert attention if the affair was revealed.

Gamrat denies taking part in a cover-up.
