SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A federal appeals court has reversed a jury’s decision to award a Sioux City doctor who’d sued his former partners more than $1 million.

The Sioux City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1EHDIoX ) that a three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that Dr. Edward Hagen was not entitled to sue Siouxland Obstetrics & Gynecology because he had an employment contract and was not an at-will employee.

In May 2013 the federal jury made the award to Hagen after he’d won his lawsuit against the practice and his three former partners. He said they fired him in retaliation for reporting an instance of medical negligence to the Iowa Board of Medicine.

Hagen argued at trial that Iowa public policy protected his responsibility to report negligence.
