PHOENIX (AP) - The defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury are headed to Washington next week to be honored for last year’s title.

President Barack Obama will welcome the Mercury to the White House on Wednesday.

Phoenix won its third WNBA title last September with a three-game sweep of the Chicago Sky in the finals.

After losing in the 2013 Western Conference finals to Minnesota, the Mercury ran away from the rest of the league last season with a 16-game winning streak. That was two wins shy of the WNBA record.

The Mercury finished the regular season 29-5 to break the league record for victories and won 15 in a row at home.

Phoenix swept Los Angeles in the playoff’s opening round and knocked off rival Minnesota in the conference finals before sweeping Chicago.
