RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A guard at the federal prison in Petersburg has pleaded guilty to taking bribes in exchange for smuggling cigarettes to inmates.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 37-year-old Jermaine Brown of Chesterfield pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of bribery of a public official.

According to court papers, Brown provided contraband cigarettes then instructed inmates to have their friends or family members wire money to an associate who passed the money along to him. Brown admitted receiving more than $3,000 in bribes.

Sentencing is set for Nov. 19. Brown faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
