BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A judge in the case of a Vermont woman charged in a fatal crash on Interstate 89 says evidence supports the prosecution’s claims that she tried to take her own life.

Police said 23-year-old Karri Benoir intended to kill herself when she crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle in Richmond on July 30. The crash killed 30-year-old Brendon Cousino of Richmond.

The Barre woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to second degree murder.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1EGBia8 ) a mechanic testified Thursday that Benoir’s car was in good condition and says she did not appear to have applied the brakes.

A judge set her bail at $100,000, which her parents posted earlier this week.

Her lawyer says he rejects claims that Benoir is a suicide or flight risk.
