DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say an armed man who barricaded himself inside his home in central Iowa has surrendered after several hours.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the 42-year-old man surrendered peacefully around 2 p.m. Friday after a tactical team deployed a chemical irritant at the residence on the northeast side of Des Moines.

The man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Charges are pending.

Deputies say they found the man early Friday outside the residence. He is accused of firing two shots into the ground before pointing the gun at his head and going inside.
