PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A western Massachusetts man has pleaded guilty to heroin possession and distribution charges.

The Berkshire Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/1WIJmlV ) 32-year-old Matthew Williamson, of Pittsfield, entered the plea Thursday in Central Berkshire District Court. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

Williamson was arrested July 1 after Pittsfield police and the Berkshire County Drug Task Force searched his apartment.

Authorities said they recovered 44 bags of heroin, a small amount of cash, digital scales and four cell phones.

Police believe he was using his apartment as an operations base for a drug business.
