VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) - A 19-year-old man who drowned Sunday while swimming with friends in the Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota was a student in the honors program at the University of South Dakota.

Brant Blaha, of Dante, went missing in the river near Elk Point on Sunday. His body was recovered Wednesday.

The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan reports (https://bit.ly/1JauB1S ) that Blaha was majoring in history education and minoring in archaeology at USD. He would have been a sophomore this fall.

USD dean of students Kim Grieve says Blaha will be remembered “as an intelligent, fun and caring person.”

Blaha graduated from Avon High School in 2014. Avon schools were not in session Friday morning so students and staff could attend his funeral.
