NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans police officer has been convicted in the aggravated rape of a 7-year-old girl in 2003.

Multiple news outlets report 41-year-old Michael Thomassie faces a mandatory life sentence after the jury returned its verdict Thursday after deliberating for just over two hours.

The victim, who is now 19, testified on Wednesday that the attack that took place in two rooms of an Algiers home in October 2003.

The police department Thursday night placed Thomassie on emergency suspension without pay following the conviction.

Thomassie, a 13-year-veteran, was placed on administrative reassignment in July 2014 when the Public Integrity Bureau and Child Abuse Unit launched a joint investigation into the rape allegations.
