ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) - State Highway Patrol officials say a teenager was killed when his car struck the side of a train in northeast Ohio.

The patrol’s Elyria post say 18-year-old Nicholas Roberts, of Wellington, was thrown from his vehicle after it hit a CSX train in Wellington Township shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday.

A patrol statement says Roberts was southbound when he struck the side of the westbound train and drove off the right side of the road. The patrol says Roberts’ car overturned, throwing him from the vehicle.

The patrol says Roberts was not using a seatbelt and was dead at the scene. Investigators were working to determine the cause of the crash.

CSX spokesman Rob Doolittle said Friday that the company is cooperating with authorities in their investigation.
