NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A 19-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after police say he was playing with a gun when he fatally shot a 15-year-old boy in North Charleston.

North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor tells local media that the boy was shot Thursday evening while he was in the passenger seat of a car. Emergency medical personnel treated the boy at the scene, but he died. The victim’s name has not been released.

Police say Deandre Michael was playing with a handgun in the backseat of the car when it went off and struck the victim.

Pryor says investigators were able to recover the weapon after Michael threw it out of the vehicle. It is unclear if Michael has an attorney.
