ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The younger sister of a 9-year-old Albuquerque boy who police say was kicked to death by his mother will testify at their stepfather’s trial.

KOB-TV in Albuquerque reports (https://bit.ly/1KzUFDz) that a judge ruled Thursday that Omaree Varela’s sister can testify in the case against Stephen Casaus, who is accused of participating in the abuse that led to his stepson’s December 2013 death.

However, the now 6-year-old girl will testify remotely through Skype or some other means.

Prosecutors initially suspected Casaus of only failing to stop the abuse but added another charge of intentional child abuse resulting in death after hearing new testimony from the girl.

Defense attorneys for Casaus initially wanted her testimony thrown out, saying it was influenced by counselors.

Jury selection for the trial starts next week.
