RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A security guard involved in a fatal altercation with a customer at a Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center pharmacy has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

David Powell of the Richmond Commonwealth Attorney’s office tells local media that a multijurisdictional grand jury on Wednesday brought the charge against 67-year-old George Brown Jr. in connection with the death of 64-year-old Butch Whitaker.

Authorities say Whitaker died after the Aug. 7 altercation. Police described the encounter as an “assault,” in which Whitaker was found unconscious on the floor with a “serious head injury.”

As of Thursday, court officials couldn’t say if Brown had been taken into custody. It is unclear if Brown has an attorney.

Brown was employed by a private contractor, Richmond-based LEW & Associates, which issued a statement Thursday that it had dismissed Brown.
