GARNER, N.C. (AP) - The Wake County school system will pay $150,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a high school student who was struck and killed by a car in 2013 as she walked to her school bus stop.

The News & Observer of Raleigh (https://bit.ly/1Ju5uMW ) reports that school officials announced this week that it had reached a settlement with the family of deceased Garner High School student Maria Fernandez Jimenez. The family had accused the school system of negligence in setting up a bus stop that had students cross a road with a 55-mph speed limit in the dark.

In announcing the settlement, school officials denied liability in the 14-year-old’s March 2013 death, but said it was not worth the cost of contesting the lawsuit.
