WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The city of Wilmington has found a new animal control contractor after the current one announced it would be pre-emptively terminating all of its government contracts.

Chester County SPCA Executive Director Adam Lamb tells The News Journal of Wilmington (https://delonline.us/1ft343h ) that the West Chester, Pennsylvania organization will take over controlling and sheltering animals for the city of Wilmington next month and is in final negotiations with Kent County.

The city of Wilmington did not respond to requests for comment late Thursday. Kent County Administrator Michael Petit de Mange confirmed that the county is “very close” to reaching an agreement with the shelter.

Last month, First State Animal Center said it would be cancelling its contracts for Wilmington and all three Delaware counties because upcoming staffing shortages would prevent the center from fulfilling its duties.
