PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Some state and federal waters off of eastern Maine will be closed to herring fishing until Sept. 11.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources says spawning closure regulations will affect the capture of spawning herring in certain areas. The restrictions began Aug. 15. The department says sufficient samples are not available to determine the spawning condition in the area, and that means closures go into effect.

The department says it will be illegal to fish for, possess or transfer any catch of herring from the closed areas. Herring taken legally outside those spots may be transported through the areas only if all fishing gear is stowed.

Maine’s herring fishery was worth more than $16 million in 2014, a record high.
